While Glen Helen is no longer on the Outdoor National schedule, it is on the list of SoCal tracks the pros hit up during the week for practice.  Being only one round in to the 2013 Outdoor season, the top riders are out pounding laps at the former National venue.  Check out this video from the guys at MXA of James Stewart, Ryan VIllopoto, Jake Weimer, Malcolm Stewart and others tearing up Glen Helen preparing for this weekend’s race at Thunder Valley.

Ken Roczen is the dominant force in the 250MX class

Ken Roczen – This year saw an entirely different Ken Roczen at the first round of the nationals.  Last year Roczen would succumb to (usually) Blake Baggett late in the motos and give up the lead.  This time around Roczen moved aggressively to the front of the pack and proceeded in putting on a riding clinic for every other rider in the field.  No one stood a chance that day, not even Blake Baggett’s wrist which only has 10% movement.  Seeing the way he rode last weekend, it would be hard to best against #94 for the win.

Blake Baggett – Baggett rode exceptionally well and while not complaining, seemed to point out the fact that there is very little movement in his right wrist.  If this truly is the case then rougher tracks will surely hinder his performance.  He got a great start which is uncharacteristic for him, and rode to a second place finish – it won’t be long before Blake grabs his first win of the season.  With the state of his wrist, getting a mid-pack start like he typically gets is not going to be in his best interest.

Tomac returns home and is ready to bring it at Thunder Valley

Eli Tomac – After practice was all said and done, Eli Tomac and his 250F claimed the fastest lap of the day, beating out the likes of Stewart, Villopoto, Dungey, etc.  So naturally he was going to win right?  Racing is different and starts are everything.  While he did lay down the fastest lap, he had nothing for Roczen in the first moto.  In the second moto he got a mid-pack start, and unless you are Blake Baggett via 2012, a race win is damn near impossible after that.  This week the series heads to his hometown state of Colorado and I bet Eli is going to be feeling very comfortable this week out there, expect another podium, if not win.

Marvin Musquin – The KTM team is really solid this year starting off the year with both factory riders in the top 5.  Musquin jumped to an early Moto 1 lead but could not hold off the “Big 3” if you will of Roczen, Baggett, and Tomac.  Marvin looked solid though throughout the day and I think his time will come – I see some podiums in the future very soon.

Zach Osborne – Osborne rounded out the top 5 at Hangtown with a 9-5 on the day.  Osborne was running in the top 3 in Moto 2 before tangling with Musquin – he would remount and eventually make his way into the top 5 by the end of the race.  A solid start for #338 and I imagine he will improve on that first moto finish come Thunder Valley.

Kyle Cunningham – Cunningham’s 8-7 put him at 6^th place on the day.  Not much focus on him during the broadcast, but a decent ride for Cunningham.  Starts are so crucial outdoors and with riders finishing all over the board, it’s really hard to say how someone will do – having said that, just like in SX, if Cunningham gets a great start (top 3) I think he can give some of the top guys a run for their money.

Jason Anderson – The Rockstar Suzuki rider almost tied his season best finish last year (5^th) with a 6^th place finish in Moto 2.  A 12^th in the first moto would put him in 7^th overall on the day.  The field is deep and 7^th is nothing to be ashamed of, but I think Anderson and his team want him to do a bit better than 12-6.  Top 5’s are in his future for sure and Thunder Valley just might be the place he does it.

Jeremy Martin – With very little seat time in the 2012 Nationals, Martin came into Hangotown as “pretty much” a rookie.  He would finish 7-13 for 8^th overall on the day.  With a class so deep with talent and not much experience, this was a great ride for Jeremy Martin.  This was also the best finish of his career in an outdoor moto.

Joey Savatgy – Another rookie with a top 10 finish that was probably overshadowed by the likes of Cooper Webb and Adam Cianciarulo.  Savatgy landed a ride on the newly formed KTM/Orange Brigade/FMF team and did not disappoint.  10-11 for 9^th overall is impressive and I’d like to see Joey improve on that finish.  I think he will get more comfortable racing outdoors with these guys as the series goes on.

Justin Hill – 10^th overall (13-9) for the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki rookie and it did not come easy.  Looking at the results on paper doesn’t do a justice as to how well the rookie rode, charging hard through the pack in both motos after poor starts.  With better starts will come better finishes for Justin Hill – I expect good things in the future for this kid.

Notable Rides

-Cooper Webb finishing Moto 1 in 5^th in his first ever outdoor race

-Darryn Durham battling with the aforementioned Cooper Webb and eventually coming away with a 6^th place finish in his first race in well over a year.

-Dillan Epstein moving up through the pack and finishing 11^th in his first moto.  This was only his second pro outdoor race ever and he is pretty much a privateer.  I expect more good motos from Epstein and hopefully the kid gets some recognition.

-Zach Bell – The saga continues…pulled an epic holeshot Moto 2, crashed somewhere, end of story (or not, as this story has been going on for some time now…)

-The most talked about rookie, Adam Cianciarulo, sits out Hangtown.  If he would have raced, I still think Cooper Webb would have smoked him.  **Update: AC is sitting out Thunder Valley as well, he hopes to be back by round 3.

Ryan Villopoto is the favorite for Thunder Valley

Ryan Villopoto: We all knew RV2 would be the top contender in the 450 class, but no one was prepared for the pure dominance that Villopoto showed at Hangtown.  While it may be a new series, RV2 looks like he is still riding with the fierceness he showed in Supercross. To say he’s on the gas is an understatement, as he beat defending champ Ryan Dungey and James Stewart by over 20 seconds.  Unless something catastrophic happens, we might see an undefeated season for the Monster Energy Kawasaki rider.

Ryan Dungey: While Dungey rode better at Hangtown this past weekend than he did last year, it is the same result, second.  RD5 looked in control, but just didn’t have the gas to keep up with Villopoto and keep him honest.  As the season progresses, Dungey might find that fire inside to give Villopoto a challenge.

James Stewart has the starts, can he deliver at Thunder Valley?

James Stewart: I was hoping to see JS7 repeat his 1-1 win last year at Hangtown, but that didn’t happen for a number of reasons.  Stewart had the starts, but once Villopoto and Dungey passed him, Stewart took it down a notch and settled in to his 3^rd place ride.  This isn’t a bad thing, as I think Stewart is looking to actually complete a full season…something he hasn’t done in the last few years.  We are seeing a more mature JS7, one that is ok with throttling it down to stay on two wheels. I do feel he will get a win this summer, though.

Trey Canard: The fact that Hangtown was TC41’s second FULL 450 outdoor national race ever (Millville ’11 and crashing out at Washougal), a 4^th place is impressive.  A 4-4 score from Trey is a solid day of racing and if he can stay healthy this season, look for him to grab a few podium spots this season.  Could it happen at Thunder Valley? Possibly.

Justin Barcia: Bam-Bam may have been the top qualifier, but his bad starts hindered his forward progress. He has the speed to be up in the top three, but if he doesn’t get a good start at Thunder Valley, he could be going backwards in the field.

Ryan Sipes: Sipes was a surprise inside the top five.  Having Davi Millsaps as a teammate has helped Sipes and it shows on the track.  While Hangtown was a great ride for him, he will get shuffled back inside the top ten at Thunder Valley.

Andrew Short: The outdoors is looking to be good for AS29. He was in a huge battle all through the day and looked good on the BTO Sports-KTM bike. For Hangtown not being is favorite track, he rode strong the first moto for 6^th.  Look for Shorty to be on his game in Thunder Valley. Since he grew up in Colorado he is used to the high altitude and thin air.  I’m predicting Shorty breaks in to the top 5 this weekend.

Mike Alessi: I don’t know what “special technology” the Alessi crew was testing, but MA800 looked off the pace all day. If Alessi doesn’t get the start, he fades off the pace and struggles to move forward.

Weston Peick: I am officially a Peick fan.  This guy has been putting in the rides this year in SX, and showed he deserves a ride full time with a team.  A solid 13-8 for 10^th overall is strong  for this privateer who is riding his heart out.  Someone, please give him a ride so he can race the FULL outdoor series!!

Chad Reed: Reedy was sick all day at Hangtown, and the fact he didn’t pass out on the track shows how determined CR22 is to be out there.  Hopefully he has kicked the flu bug and is back in action at Thunder Valley.

Michael Byrne: While his leg isn’t at 100%, Byrner made his return to racing last week at Hangtown. He looked good out there, even grabbing great starts.  He showed he still wants it, as he ran inside the top ten for half the moto.  Finishing inside the top twenty at his first race back, the team will take it.  As the season progresses, look for Byrne to turn it up and battle inside the top 5, maybe even getting that win he almost had last season.

Notables:

We have “Mookie Fever”

Malcolm Stewart looked impressive on the TLD Honda, dicing it out with Andrew Short and Dean Wilson for 6^th.  Then his bike let go, due to an altercation with Wilson that damaged the water pump.  Malcolm has only had a few days to get familiar with the Honda, but he was on fire! Expect him to be right up there at Thunder Valley mixing it up inside the top ten. I officially have “Mookie Fever.”

What is going on with the JGRMX team? Justin Brayton and Josh Grant both got beat by Travis Preston, a rider that only came out to ride one race and hasn’t the series ridden in ages.  Grant clearly isn’t ready to be back out on the track, and Brayton needs a fire lit under him.  Whatever it is, the JGRMX riders need to wake up.

Clement Desalle and Kevin Strijbos are ready to take on RV2

Thunder Valley will see a few different riders on the track, as a few MXGP riders are flying across the pond to mix it up with the AMA riders.  Rockstar Energy Suzuki MX1 riders Kevin Strijbos and Clement Desalle are coming out on their weekend off to do battle against the Thunder Valley track and the AMA Pro riders.  They possibly might have a chance to break inside the top ten, me thinks. RACE RESULTS: Barel and Moseley Win Inaugural EWS Event in Punta Ala

Well, the first ever Enduro World Series race is in the bag, and it sure seems to have lived up to all the hype. In the men’s, we have Fabien Barel, World Champ DH racer to Enduro convert on the top spot of the podium followed by the Enduro specialist Jerome Clementz and Jared Graves, 4Xer-turned-Enduro-racer in third. In the women’s Anne-Caro Chausson retired after a crash on stage 1, leaving the door open for Tracy Moseley, World Champ DHer-come-Enduro racer to win from World Champ DHer Emmeline Ragot and World Cup XCer Cecile Ravanel in third.

 

 

Of note:
Jared Graves – what a machine! All that training sure looks to have paid off, and it looks like the message is out loud and clear: Graves is not to be trifled with. Martin Maes pips team mate Dan Atherton to 4th spot, not bad for a 16-yr old (including a crash on PS4). Ben Cruz brings home 6th for the US of A. Blenki in 7th – tidy for the DHer, beating some of Enduro’s biggest names in the process.

Tracy’s time puts her in 85th spot overall, 3.43 off Barel. Emmeline Ragot was a further minute back, 113th overall.

Sacramento, CA (May 19) – The BTO Sports-KTM team started off the Outdoor season this past weekend during the opening round of the  2013 AMA Outdoor Motocross Championship on the famed Hangtown MX track in Sacramento, CA. With team rider Michael Byrne returning to action alongside teammate Andrew Short, the riders set their nerves aside and focused on tackling the rough Hangtown track.

EVENT RECAP:

Andrew Short rode strong all day. In Moto 1, Short would nail a great start, thanks to the power of his KTM Factory Services Engines, and would find himself battling inside the top ten. He would pick up the pace in the final 10 minutes of the moto to finish in 6^th place. Moto 2 he rode well on the rough, square edged track and held on for consistent top ten ride again, finishing off in 10^th.  With a 6-10 score, Short would finish the day with 7^th overall.

Michael Byrne returned to action, after having a lengthy off time since his injury at Unadilla last season.  For his first ride back,  Byrne did great in the heavily stacked field.  With a 19-16 moto score, he battled inside the top twenty all day, which is where he and the team were shooting for. Byrne would really shine in the second moto on the rough track, using the traction from the Pirelli Scorpion MX tires to run in the top 7 for the first half of the moto, showing that he is a top ten threat as the season progresses. Byrne would finish the day with 19^th overall.

“Overall I am very pleased with both riders” said team manager Forrest Butler. “The team worked very hard and smoothly. Credit goes to all of them for their hard work and preparation for Hangtown. I’m excited for Rd.2 this weekend!”

The team heads to Rd. 2 of the 2013 AMA Outdoor Motocross Championship at Thunder Valley MX in Lakewood, CO this Saturday.
