West Coast 250 Supercross Preview
It’s that time of the year again and the first round of supercross is right around the corner. All of the teams are wrapping up their testing and getting ready to go out and do battle at A1. There looks to be some heavy hitters on the West Coast that will surely provide for great racing action. Among those you can expect to see lined up at A1 are Blake Baggett, Eli Tomac, Cole Seely, Jason Anderson, Tyla Rattray, Travis Baker, Ryan Sipes, Ken Roczen, Jessy Nelson, Kyle Cunningham, Martin Davalos, Christian Craig, Kevin Weisbruch, Zach Osborne, and Dillan Epstein to name a few. Many of these riders will show up on the same bike as last year but there were a few notable switches this offseason, one being Martin Davalos. Davalos has shown the speed to stay up front in numerous heat races, it just seems that he has never been able to put in the full 15 laps and get the win. His best finish last year was a 3rd at Salt Lake City. Armed with a new team and arguably one of the best bikes out there, can Martin Davalos finally find the speed to run up front in the main on his Mitch Peyton tuned Pro Circuit Kawasaki KX250F? Also on new teams, Travis Baker has switched from TLD Honda over to the Valli Yamaha team and Zach Osborne will be racing in his first full West Coast 250 season under the Geico Honda tent. Zach showed flashes of brilliance last year as a fill in rider for the first four rounds and is sure to be battling in the top 5.
Blake Baggett (Monster Energy/Pro Circuit Kawasaki) is coming off of a 4th place finish last year in the East Coast 250 class but wrapped up the top spot in the Lucas Oil Nation Championship just a few months back – it will be interesting to see if Blake can carry that momentum into Anaheim. With just three podiums last year, Blake will need to get great starts and be more consistent this year if he wants a shot at the title.
Ken Roczen (Red Bull KTM) will also be making the switch over to the West coast this year. Last year on the East Coast, Ken grabbed a win and a few podiums, but crashes and consistency issues let Barcia run away with the title. Many are touting this year to be Roczen’s year. It would be great to see him up there battling for the win week in and week out – he has put in a lot of hard work and time will tell if this year will be the championship year that Roczen has been dreaming of since he came over from Germany.
Another rider who has a chance at the title is Cole Seely (TLD Honda). Cole showed incredible speed last year, especially at the season opener last year by grabbing the lead and running away with the win in convincing fashion. Seely was able to grab a few podiums after that and was still in the running for the title until a horrific crash in Salt Lake City sidelined him for the rest of the supercross and outdoor season. Cole has been training hard and having more fun than ever – expect good things to come from him this year.
Last but not least – Eli Tomac (GEICO Honda), the reigning West Coast 250 champion. Tomac turned a lot of heads aboard the Geico Honda CRF450 at Monster Energy Cup and has been quite vocal about how much he likes riding the 450 and how it suits him better. Regardless, Tomac will line up this year for likely his last season aboard the 250F. Tomac was rock solid last year with five wins including the East/West Shootout in Las Vegas. Other than the San Diego round where he had a bad get off in the whoops, Tomac finshed no worse than 4th place.
There are at least 5 riders out there who can go get the win on any given week, and with such a stacked field, it’s going to take good starts and consistent finishes to claim the West Coast 250 title. We can’t to see what A1 has in store for us.
